Southern Style Hindu Wedding Ceremony

The traditional Hindu wedding is a deeply meaningful and symbolic combination of rituals and traditions. The ceremony is about 4000 years old. Each phase of the ceremony has a symbolic, philosophical and spiritual meaning. The ceremony not only joins the souls of the bride and groom, but creates a long tie between two families. The ceremony is traditionally performed in Sanskrit, which is the language of ancient India and Hinduism.

Oonjal and Aarthi

In a Hindu wedding the couple sits together on a swing, called an Oonjal. In this case the mother’s of Viji and Eric gave the couple sweetened milk and bananas. They circled rice balls around the couple in clockwise and anti-clockwise fashion directions to signify that the couple will remain strong together through the ups and downs of life, warding off evil influences.
